Notes
The Basic Reverse Turn (QQSQQS) is listed in the Associate Syllabus (Bronze) of our 1966 edition of The Revised Technique by Alex Moore. In Guy Howard's The Tango and Basic Principles, the Basic Reverse Turn is still listed as Bronze with the (QQSQQS) timing, with some alternative timings listed below. By contrast, the ISTD lists the Basic Reverse Turn is as Gold. We assume the popularity of the faster timing (QQ&QQS) and the presence of a viable alternative in Pre-Bronze (Open Reverse Turn, Lady Outside), caused it to become an advanced figure in the newer versions of the Ballroom Technique. Timing There are several different timings for the Basic Reverse Turn. Each syllabus only permits certain versions to be danced, denoted after each one. QQSQQS (ISTD), (IDTA) QQ&QQS (ISTD), (IDTA) Q&QQQS (IDTA) QQ&QQ& (IDTA) It should be noted that the last timing (QQ&QQ&) is a common figure in Open Tango, and is popularly referred to as the Viennese Crosses. The Open Finish/Closed Finish As with the all figures that end with Closed Finish, an Open Finish may be substituted without changing the Precedes or Follows. The figures following an Open Finish are begun Outside Partner, but are otherwise unchanged. Exit Backwards As with all Open and Closed Finishes, the Basic Reverse Turn may be followed with Back Corté, LF Rock, or Outside Swivel (Methods 1&2). 1-3 Basic Reverse Turn The Tango and Basic Principles lists 1-3 Basic Reverse Turn as a possible entry for the Reverse Pivot. To our knowledge, there is no such option in the Ballroom Technique. |
